Women ONE2ONE | Home

Women build communities. They educate and advocate. They create change. Many women living in the poorest parts of the planet are making progress against enormous odds. But their progress can be accelerated if we stand together as ONE. To halt the spread of malaria and HIV. To protect mothers. To put millions of kids in school. To create more women entrepreneurs.

Yet despite this an estimated 70% of people living in extreme poverty are women.

But study after study has shown that by empowering women we can help bring communities out of poverty and transform the lives of millions. Each woman is powerful on her own, but joined together we can go beyond.

Will you join us?

Witness for Wildlife (W4W) is a citizen naturalist community dedicated to chronicling and protecting North America's wildlife corridors. The public debut of the full program is set for later this Spring. At that time the site will include a host of features including:

* access to corridor and wildlife information, maps and stories via the Corridor Commons initiative
* sponsored conservation trips in wildlife corridors across North America
* citizen naturalists generated wildlife corridor field observations, reports and stories
* training and grassroots networking opportunities
* and much more

Be one of the first to get involved and help protect wildlife and their corridors. Join the W4W Citizen Naturalist community today!
W4W is a program of Freedom to Roam which is a non-profit initiative that brings together people, organizations and businesses to enhance and protect wildlife corridors and landscape connectivity in North America.
What are Wildlife Corridors?
Wildlife corridors are pathways that allow regular travel, seasonal migration or population dispersal of different species. Without intact, healthy corridors, species are unable to migrate, move, find food, reproduce or effectively adapt to a warming planet, habitat fragmentation or human development. As corridors disappear, so do wildlife.

Musicians Rock the Boat for Sea Shepherd

In 1978, the first Sea Shepherd vessel hunted down and rammed the 'Sierra', a notorious pirate whaling ship, in a Portuguese harbor. Since then, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has conducted hundreds of missions, practicing full-contact ocean conservation, and even landing a starring role in the T.V. show 'Whale Wars'.
Bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, accustomed to making their own waves, seem to vibe with Sea Shepherd's brand of activist marine mayhem. After 25 years of supporting the group, Anthony Kiedis and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers were awarded Sea Shepherd's first 'Rock the Boat' award, in 2007. Trash McSweeney, lead singer for Australian art-rock band The Red Paintings, finds a kindred spirit in Sea Shepherd's maverick Captain Paul Watson, and the likes of Mick Jagger and Rick Rubin have been seen at Sea Shepherd galas.
According to Sea Shepherd:
Music is a powerful media and it is an essential tool for increasing awareness and raising support. We all have the power to change the world in so many different ways and musicians are blessed with the ability to convey messages powerfully with great emotion.
On August 12, Modest Mouse released a music video for King Rat", a track off their new album, No One's First, And You're Next. Proceeds from the download of the music video on iTunes the first month of its release will be donated to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to support their ocean conservation campaigns.

Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner: Does International Women's Day Matter in the U.S.?

A friend called me today, sharing her delight that her 10-year-old daughter came down to breakfast and wished her a "Happy International Women's Day!" We marveled that her daughter knew about this important day without her mom telling her for the first time, and shared some happy thoughts about our strong, growing, young daughters.
Then the conversation turned: We simultaneously realized that both of our daughters think of International Woman's Day as something we celebrate for women in other countries, not our own.
We wondered, why?

The Cove wins an Oscar for Best Documentary, read an important message from Ric O'barry

Save Japan Dolphins: The Cove Wins the Oscar!

The Cove Wins the Oscar!

All Eyes Turn To Japan
An Important Message from Ric O'Barry and the Save Japan Dolphins Campaign:

Without your support, this would never have happened. So, even though I wasn't able to thank you all at the podium, I thank you all now.

But this has never been about winning awards. Our job is to end the slaughter and stop the poisoning. And now our work in Japan begins anew. We must focus like a laser on getting The Cove and our message to the Japanese people.

But there are threats on the horizon. Officials in Japan are threatening repercussions against university and community groups that dare to show The Cove. Dolphin-killing fishermen's unions are threatening lawsuits against theaters that show the film. There are even some signs that I could face arrest in Japan, even though I've broken no laws whatsoever.

We wont give in to this pressure. Instead, I am making plans to spend months in Japan with our Save Japan Dolphins Team. I want to be wherever we can find an audience. Our message will particularly resonate with young people, to whom we need to reach out with the dangers of mercury-contaminated dolphin meat and the slaughter of dolphins they love as much as we do.

If you can help me, it will make a world of difference.

DONATE NOW:

The Oscar telecast is the most-watched TV show in Japan! And they, and more than a billion other viewers, saw The Cove movie win!

But now I also need your help in sending a clear message to Japan's Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety, that the sale of mercury-laden dolphin meat must end now: Sign and send the petition at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/4/ban-the-sale-of-dolphin-meat

We need help in promoting the Japanese version of The Cove in the next weeks before The Cove opens at Japanese theaters. We need help for travel, video promotion, website outreach, legal defense, and screening The Cove outside of theaters in libraries, universities, and town halls in Japan.

Japan has 126 million people; only 600 have seen The Cove so far. Those who saw it were shocked and dismayed that this slaughter was happening in their country. We need to enlist their help and the help of millions of their fellow citizens to stop the Japanese government from issuing 23,000 permits annually to slaughter dolphins. We need to seize on the momentum now to pursue an end to the slaughter, once and for all!

Will you help us get the truth out?

DONATE NOW:

Thank you for your generous support of our efforts!

Ric O'Barry
Campaign Director
Save Japan Dolphins Campaign

P.S. The Save Japan Dolphins Campaign and Earth Island Institute do not get any funds from The Cove movie sales. (Those funds go to the OPS, which made the film, and their investors to reimburse them for their considerable costs in making The Cove.)

P.P.S. If you think there is any possibility that you might be able to come over to Taiji on September 1st to celebrate the beauty of Taiji and let them know that the killing of dolphins shouldn't start again, please note that on the comment field on the donation form.

Special Challenge to Help HeartReach Animal Society

Hi Natalie, Since December, our special challenges have meant tens of thousands of dollars for the organizations listed at iGive, groups just like HeartReach Animal Society. These challenges are our response to the tough economic times. We're tremendously pleased that they're working, so we've put together another 24 hour / $5,000 challenge. It requires your participation, but it is free and definitely easy. We'll give HeartReach Animal Society a dollar for each person who joins iGive using the special link below and visits one store via iGive between noon Wednesday, February 24, 2010 (Chicago time) and noon Thursday, the next day. Here's where you come in. Send your friends, family, and colleagues the following link in an e-mail, tweet it, do a Facebook posting, put up posters, shout from mountain tops (you know the drill) and let them know you think HeartReach Animal Society is pretty cool and deserves their support, especially since it's free! You can even just forward this e-mail. The only way HeartReach Animal Society will get new supporters and that free $1 (or more) is if you invite them. This is the link: http://www.igive.com/welcome/warm_reg_promo.cfm?m=446563 5,000 new members, $5,000. No purchase necessary. That's 5,000 new members for all causes, not just yours, and it's only for 24 hours, so it's a bit of race. It can turn into more than a dollar, much more ... if these new members search or buy something at an iGive store they'll earn much-needed money for HeartReach Animal Society. Right now, we're donating a special bonus of $5 for that first purchase plus the usual percentage. Active iGive members raise an average of over $40 per year for their cause. The details: - Offer active between 12:00 p.m. February 24, 2010 and 11:59 a.m., February 25, 2010 (Chicago time). - New members only (never have been an iGive member previously). All the normal rules of membership, searching, and purchasing apply, our site has the details. - Once we've given away $5,000 in total, the offer ends. - The special link and visiting a store via iGive are necessary.

Love Needs No Pedigree™

The American Mutti-i-grees Club is a movement and organization whose time has come.

Over the past 2 decades, awareness of the plight of millions of shelter animals euthanized each year has increased, and the time is right for the 25 million+ American mixed-breed dog owners to join together as one voice to incite change.

The American Mutt-i-grees Club, in association with thousands of shelter partners, including lead partner, North Shore Animal League America (the world’s largest no-kill shelter), is committed to the dual goal of elevating the mixed-breed dog – the Mutt-i-gree – to increase shelter adoptions across America, and exposing and eradicating puppy mills, and disreputable backyard breeders that trade in the misery of dogs for profit.

Smarter than you think - Times Online

The animal kingdom is home to much greater intelligence than has been previously acknowledged, with scientists seeing evidence of human-like traits everywhere

t was the sight of a diminutive Diana monkey attacking a giant crowned eagle in the treetops of the Tai forest in Ivory Coast, west Africa, that gave Klaus Zuberbühler his great insight into the language of monkeys.

As the animal charged the bird it emitted screams that Zuberbühler, a psychologist at St Andrews University, knew he had heard before.
