Love Needs No Pedigree™

The American Mutti-i-grees Club is a movement and organization whose time has come.

Over the past 2 decades, awareness of the plight of millions of shelter animals euthanized each year has increased, and the time is right for the 25 million+ American mixed-breed dog owners to join together as one voice to incite change.

The American Mutt-i-grees Club, in association with thousands of shelter partners, including lead partner, North Shore Animal League America (the world’s largest no-kill shelter), is committed to the dual goal of elevating the mixed-breed dog – the Mutt-i-gree – to increase shelter adoptions across America, and exposing and eradicating puppy mills, and disreputable backyard breeders that trade in the misery of dogs for profit.

The animal kingdom is home to much greater intelligence than has been previously acknowledged, with scientists seeing evidence of human-like traits everywhere

t was the sight of a diminutive Diana monkey attacking a giant crowned eagle in the treetops of the Tai forest in Ivory Coast, west Africa, that gave Klaus Zuberbühler his great insight into the language of monkeys.

As the animal charged the bird it emitted screams that Zuberbühler, a psychologist at St Andrews University, knew he had heard before.

The Myth of 100% Complete Pet Food | Sick-Cats.Com

Every day, people by the millions pour food from a package into their pet’s bowl. Day in and day out, meal after meal, pets get the same fare. This strange phenomenon is widely practiced by loving pet owners who believe they are doing the right thing.

Why? Certainly because it is convenient, but also because the labels state that such foods are “complete and balanced,” “100% complete,” or that they have passed various analytical and feeding test standards. Furthermore, manufacturers, and even veterinarians, counsel pet owners about not feeding other foods, such as table scraps, because of the danger of unbalancing these modern processed nutritional marvels. The power of the message is so great that pet owners en masse do every day to their pets what they would never do to themselves or their children – force-feed the same processed food at every meal.

PR-CANADA.net - Captain Paul Watson of Sunken Anti-Whaling Vessel Subject of Documentary About Heroic Efforts to Sav

Posted by Editor
Sunday, 10 January 2010
The world's attention was drawn this week to the shocking action of a Japanese whaling vessel, which rammed the Ady Gil, a sleek and speedy trimaran owned and operated by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, putting its crew members in danger of drowning and ultimately causing the craft to sink. The incident, which occurred January 5th in the Antarctic Marine Whale Sanctuary, brought up the subject of international agreements to limit the slaughter of marine life, which have been widely ignored by whalers and other large scale fishing operations.

One of the heroes in the fight against these illegal operations is Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, whose life and work has been brilliantly captured and recorded in the riveting documentary, "Pirate for the Sea." The film has been shown and has won awards at film festivals around the world since premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in 2008. Producer/writer/director Ron Colby calls Watson "the most daring, effective, and controversial marine environmental activist ever." A worthy subject for his film!

Despite its timeliness, "Pirate for the Sea" has not been shown theatrically outside of film festivals. A public increasingly aware of the dire conditions of the world's oceans, however, would undoubtedly consider it a "must see," just as they did Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" a few years ago. Meanwhile, there is a good deal of information about Watson's Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on the web, where his efforts and accomplishments can be admired and applauded.

For film-goers within driving range of Sonoma or Nevada City, "Pirate for the Sea" will be showing at film festivals in both those locations later this month. Causes on Facebook | Whaledefenders stop the killing! | Bulletin: Japanese Whalers Ram and sink Sea Shepherd ship Ady Gil"

Posted by Hans Lak at 2:20am
Famed Catamaran is sinking in the Southern Ocean

Six crew members Rescued by the Sea Shepherd Ship Bob Barker

In an unprovoked attack captured on film, the Japanese security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 deliberately rammed and caused catastrophic damage to the Sea Shepherd catamaran Ady Gil.

Six crew crew members, four from New Zealand, one from Australia, and one from the Netherlands were immediately rescued by the crew of the Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker. None of the crew Ady Gil crew were injured.

The Ady Gil is believed to be sinking and chances of salvage are very grim.

According to eyewitness Captain Chuck Swift on the Bob Barker, the attack happened while the vessels were dead in the water. The Shonan Maru No. 2 suddenly started up and deliberately rammed the Ady Gil ripping eight feet of the bow of the vessel completely off. According to Captain Swift, the vessel does not look like it will be saved.

“The Japanese whalers have now escalated this conflict very violently,” said Captain Paul Watson. “If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken. We now have a real whale war on our hands now and we have no intention of retreating.”

Captain Paul Watson onboard the Steve Irwin is racing towards the area at 16 knots but still remains some five hundred miles to the north. The Bob Barker has temporarily stopped the pursuit of the Nisshin Maru to rescue the crew of the Ady Gil. The Japanese ships initially refused to acknowledge the May Day distress of the Ady Gil,...

L.A. family raises money for homeless pets -- with root beer

October 20, 2009 |  2:13 pm
Most pet owners we know wish they could do more to help needy, homeless and abandoned animals -- but they don't necessarily have the time, space or resources to do the hands-on rescue work themselves. The L.A.-based Youd family found a unique way to help pets in need (and created a delicious beverage in the process). Guest blogger Janet Kinosian shares their story:
Margo How many black Labradors do you know who have a cane sugar-and-molasses-sweetened, preservative-free root beer named after them?
As of now, you know one. The dog is Margo. The drink is Margo's Bark.
Two years ago, Oscar Youd, now 8, made root beer for his Los Angeles school science project. He and his father, Tim Youd, wanted to show how sugar and yeast can create carbonation. They did some study and christened the resulting mellow, high-fructose corn syrup-free brew they concocted Margo's Bark Root Beer after their family dog, a mellow and friendly gal and former Long Beach parking-lot stray.
The 300-odd folks at Oscar's school fair raved so loudly about the drink's wonderful taste that it got Tim, a marketing and internet entrepreneur, thinking. He embarked on a root-beer fact-finding mission, jesting about running a root-beer business. It turns out he wasn't kidding: Margo is now the namesake of her very own root beer company, Margo's Bark Soda Co. (motto: Drink a Bite!).
Like the Newman's Own brand, all of the profits from Margo's Bark go toward charity -- in this case, helping the causes of shelter and rescue dogs, many in Los Angeles, such as the Rescue Train and Barks of Love. You can find the drink at Bristol Farms, Whole Foods, Milk and various other L.A. spots.
The moral to this story: Never underestimate the power of dogs, school science projects -- or the power of a swell-tasting root beer.

About a month ago, a tiny mixed-breed puppy wandered onto Sgt. Lucas May's camp in Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan.

Knowing it was against military rules to keep local animals as pets, May hesitated to feed or pet the pup. But her brown eyes and floppy ears were hard to resist.

A few days later, May, a member of the Kansas Army National Guard, called his wife in Valley Center.

"He said, 'We found this dog, and we want to see if we can get permission to rescue her,' " Amanda May said. "He loves dogs, and he knows how much I love dogs.

"I told him, 'We'll do everything we can to bring her home.' "

LAPLACE, La. - It was a final chance to romp around in the Southeast Louisiana sun for three puppies and their mom. The four dogs were at the St. John Airport in Reserve, preparing to take off on a northern voyage that will end up saving their lives.

"We go to the shelters and we get animals out of the shelter that are on death row," said Bert Claveire, of the non-profit group "Dog's Wish."

Clinic Update

The managers did a great job taking care of all of our patients over fall break, and now all of the volunteers are back and managing their cases. We currently have 5 red-tailed hawks, a screech owl and a pigeon. We were also able to send one of our red-tailed hawks to a rehabilitation facility just before break. The hawk had originally presented with a broken tibiotarsus (leg). His surgery went well, and his subsequent re-check radiographs (x-rays) should good alignment and callus formation around the fracture.
