But their progress can be accelerated if we stand together as ONE. To halt the spread of malaria and HIV. To protect mothers. To put millions of kids in school. To create more women entrepreneurs.

Yet despite this an estimated 70% of people living in extreme poverty are women.

But study after study has shown that by empowering women we can help bring communities out of poverty and transform the lives of millions. Each woman is powerful on her own, but joined together we can go beyond.

Witness for Wildlife - A Volunteer Citizen Naturalist Community | Home

Witness for Wildlife (W4W) is a citizen naturalist community dedicated to chronicling and protecting North America's wildlife corridors. The public debut of the full program is set for later this Spring. At that time the site will include a host of features including:

* access to corridor and wildlife information, maps and stories via the Corridor Commons initiative
* sponsored conservation trips in wildlife corridors across North America
* citizen naturalists generated wildlife corridor field observations, reports and stories
* training and grassroots networking opportunities
* and much more

W4W is a program of Freedom to Roam which is a non-profit initiative that brings together people, organizations and businesses to enhance and protect wildlife corridors and landscape connectivity in North America.
What are Wildlife Corridors?
Wildlife corridors are pathways that allow regular travel, seasonal migration or population dispersal of different species. Without intact, healthy corridors, species are unable to migrate, move, find food, reproduce or effectively adapt to a warming planet, habitat fragmentation or human development. As corridors disappear, so do wildlife.

Missoula-based land trust acquires third parcel at Bismark Meadows
Missoula, MT - The Vital Ground Foundation announced today that it has acquired 57 acres of crucial grizzly bear habitat at North Idaho’s Bismark Meadows. Located just west of Priest Lake, Bismark Meadows is an 1,100-acre complex of meadows and wetlands that features a dramatic array of rare flora and fauna. It supports several endangered plant species and provides habitat for moose, elk, deer, black bear, wolves, lynx, westslope cutthroat trout, and eagles, as well as the threatened Selkirk Mountains grizzly population. The project area lies within the Selkirk Grizzly Bear Recovery Zone as delineated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Musicians Rock the Boat for Sea Shepherd

In 1978, the first Sea Shepherd vessel hunted down and rammed the 'Sierra', a notorious pirate whaling ship, in a Portuguese harbor. Since then, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has conducted hundreds of missions, practicing full-contact ocean conservation, and even landing a starring role in the T.V. show 'Whale Wars'.
Bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, accustomed to making their own waves, seem to vibe with Sea Shepherd's brand of activist marine mayhem. After 25 years of supporting the group, Anthony Kiedis and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers were awarded Sea Shepherd's first 'Rock the Boat' award, in 2007. Trash McSweeney, lead singer for Australian art-rock band The Red Paintings, finds a kindred spirit in Sea Shepherd's maverick Captain Paul Watson, and the likes of Mick Jagger and Rick Rubin have been seen at Sea Shepherd galas.
According to Sea Shepherd:
Music is a powerful media and it is an essential tool for increasing awareness and raising support. We all have the power to change the world in so many different ways and musicians are blessed with the ability to convey messages powerfully with great emotion.
On August 12, Modest Mouse released a music video for King Rat", a track off their new album, No One's First, And You're Next. Proceeds from the download of the music video on iTunes the first month of its release will be donated to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to support their ocean conservation campaigns.

A friend called me today, sharing her delight that her 10-year-old daughter came down to breakfast and wished her a "Happy International Women's Day!" We marveled that her daughter knew about this important day without her mom telling her for the first time, and shared some happy thoughts about our strong, growing, young daughters.
Then the conversation turned: We simultaneously realized that both of our daughters think of International Woman's Day as something we celebrate for women in other countries, not our own.

The Cove Wins the Oscar!

All Eyes Turn To Japan
An Important Message from Ric O'Barry and the Save Japan Dolphins Campaign:

Without your support, this would never have happened. So, even though I wasn't able to thank you all at the podium, I thank you all now.

But this has never been about winning awards. Our job is to end the slaughter and stop the poisoning. And now our work in Japan begins anew. We must focus like a laser on getting The Cove and our message to the Japanese people.

But there are threats on the horizon. Officials in Japan are threatening repercussions against university and community groups that dare to show The Cove. Dolphin-killing fishermen's unions are threatening lawsuits against theaters that show the film. There are even some signs that I could face arrest in Japan, even though I've broken no laws whatsoever.

We wont give in to this pressure. Instead, I am making plans to spend months in Japan with our Save Japan Dolphins Team. I want to be wherever we can find an audience. Our message will particularly resonate with young people, to whom we need to reach out with the dangers of mercury-contaminated dolphin meat and the slaughter of dolphins they love as much as we do.

The Oscar telecast is the most-watched TV show in Japan! And they, and more than a billion other viewers, saw The Cove movie win!

We need help in promoting the Japanese version of The Cove in the next weeks before The Cove opens at Japanese theaters. We need help for travel, video promotion, website outreach, legal defense, and screening The Cove outside of theaters in libraries, universities, and town halls in Japan.

Japan has 126 million people; only 600 have seen The Cove so far. Those who saw it were shocked and dismayed that this slaughter was happening in their country. We need to enlist their help and the help of millions of their fellow citizens to stop the Japanese government from issuing 23,000 permits annually to slaughter dolphins. We need to seize on the momentum now to pursue an end to the slaughter, once and for all!
