Enjoy a living Christmas tree you then plant and enjoy for years
If you landscape needs a nice evergreen tree, consider purchasing a balled-and burlap tree you decorate indoors for about five days, then plant outdoors for years of enjoyment ... and holiday lights in the landscape.
Trees you can use for this purpose and purchase at garden centers in Hampton Roads include cypress, arborvitae and the native eastern red cedar (pictured here).
Keep in mind that living trees are very heavy and bulky, according ot the National Christmas Tree Association. A 6-foot-tall tree balled and burlapped can weight as much as 250 pounds.
The tree should be stored in an unheated, sheltered area such as a garage or porch, out of the wind and sun. Do not expose the tree to freezing temperatures at any time.
The tree will need adequate water. The root ball or soil should be kept slightly damp but not flooded. Wrap the root ball of a balled tree in plastic or place in a tub while it is in the house.

Wildlife beyond boundaries: The clue lies in corridors - The Economic Times
Just as we were slipping into a reverie, imagining ourselves in pristine wilderness, a woman called loudly to her children playing nearby as she washed clothes outside a neat row of houses, a mere hundred metres upslope of the elephants.
This vignette, from the Anamalai Hills of southern India, is not all that unusual. Across large parts of our country, a wide range of species still occur outside the confines of wildlife reserves, and even in the middle of busy, human-dominated landscapes. This is possible because a variety of natural and human-modified habitats - forest fragments, coffee plantations, orchards, paddy fields, marshes and lakes – still exist outside our reserves. These habitats may offer permanent residence for smaller creatures, whereas larger species may use them as passageways to move between wildlife reserves.
But the size, location and status of these habitats that lie outside reserves often belie their importance to the survival of endangered animals. This is so for many reasons.
Firstly, our wildlife reserves, crafted more by circumstance than by design, look like islands when seen on a map. But not long ago, wild animals occupied vast unbroken stretches of habitat – the Western Ghats that run across five states is a good example – and have evolved to move and migrate across such large landscapes.

Watch Out for Wildlife Awareness Week - Defenders of Wildlife
September 12, 2010- September 18, 2010
Nationwide
Every year Defenders of Wildlife organizes and promotes Watch Out for Wildlife Awareness Week, a week designated to raise public awareness of the serious obstacles facing the nation's wildlife due to its transportation infrastructure – both by roadway deaths and through habitat fragmentation.
Transportation infrastructure, though vital, cuts through the habitat of wildlife populations and creates the danger of wildlife-vehicle collisions. Each year in the US more than 200 people are killed in collisions with deer, elk and other wildlife; more than 1.5 million animals are estimated to be hit on roads; and the cost of property damage caused by collisions surpasses $1 billion. For some wild populations, roadkill added to other threats such as habitat loss, fragmentation, climate change and invasive species, is severely reducing their viability.
The main goal of Watch Out for Wildlife Awareness Week is to reduce risks of collision for the benefit of people and wildlife.

ALERT : DO NOT ADOPT ANIMALS TO THIS MAN!
Please cross post to all shelters, ACOs and anyone doing adoptions! He will torture and kill any animal he gets his hands on. He sometimes has a woman helping him. It is best to check driver's licenses to verify identity.
Subject: Do Not Adopt!!!!
I work at an animal shelter in northwest CT. Today we had to keep all our doors locked and check people (license, etc) before they entered our shelter and keep the security camera on at all times. There is a man called Jay Baldwin who just got out of jail on Thursday and on Friday he stopped at a local vet and tried to get an animal from them. They recommended our shelter and another local one (not knowing his reputation, he is known for animal abuse). Our director alerted the police who kept an eye on us and will continue to do so. He may even break into a building to get an animal.
Jay Baldwin is in his 50s, tanned and likes to wear hats. He will pay an adoption fee to get the animal and can even get violent and take the animal if thwarted. He may also send friends in to get the animal. He will use other names. So it this makes it hard to tell who he is. Hopefully adoption screening will help keep animals from him.
Please let other shelters you know of know this.
First Names: Jay
Last Name: Baldwin
City/State: Derby, CT
Posting: This guy was charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty in Derby, CT Superior Court. He is 59 years old, tall and pot belly heavy, bald and a very smooth talker. He is prohibited from having any pets now and anyone who knows of him trying to adopt a pet should contact Ansonia Police directly at:203 734 1651.

Breaking news: The progressive Delaware Companion Animal Protection Act
Great Seal of the State of Delaware
The State of Delaware has just passed the most forward-moving animal companion law in the country. The law, initiated by the non-profit No Kill shelter Faithful Friends, in Wilmington, Delaware, modeled itself after the No Kill Advocacy Center’s Companion Animal Protection Act, notes the No Kill Advocacy Center, which initially reported the recent ratification of the law.
The Delaware Companion Animal Protection Act will insist upon collaboration between shelters and rescue groups. Thus, a shelter will be unable to kill an animal if a rescue group is willing to save that animal’s life. It also makes illegal “convenience killing,” mandating that shelters can no longer euthanize an animal if there are cages available or if the animal can share a cage or kennel with another one.

BBC News - Secret trade in illegal rare species
From his semi-detached house in a quiet Coventry suburb, Alan Dudley played a small part in a huge global trade in endangered species.
It is a trade that is pushing many species to the edge of extinction, and the National Wildlife Crime Unit says there are clear indications it is on the increase.
When investigators raided Dudley's home they found the skulls of hundreds of exotic animals and birds in an upstairs room.

ENTJ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- This article is about the Myers-Briggs personality type. For the Socionics ENTj, see Logical Intuitive Extrovert.
ENTJ (extraversion, intuition, thinking, judgment) is an abbreviation used in the publications of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to refer to one of sixteen personality types.[1] The MBTI assessment was developed from the work of prominent psychiatrist Carl G. Jung in his book Psychological Types, which proposed a psychological typology based on his theories of cognitive functions.
From Jung's work, others developed psychological typologies. Jungian personality assessments include the MBTI assessment, developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs, and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, developed by David Keirsey. Keirsey referred to ENTJs as Fieldmarshals, one of the four types belonging to the temperament he called the Rationals.
ENTJs are among the rarest of types, accounting for about 2–5% of those who are formally tested.[2][3] They tend to be self-driven, motivating, energetic, assertive, confident, and competitive. They generally take a big-picture view and build a long-term strategy.Read more:

If you’ve decided to welcome a dog into your family, you may be considering buying a puppy from a breeder. While many potential canine guardians have heard about the horrors of puppy mills and “backyard breeders,” they mistakenly think that buying a puppy from a so-called responsible breeder is acceptable. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Why Breeding Dogs Is Killing Dogs
Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the United States each year. Some are reclaimed or adopted, but nearly 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are left with nowhere to go.(1) Animal shelters cannot humanely house and support all these animals until they die of natural causes—the animals would be forced to live for years, lonely and stressed, in cramped cages or kennels. And other animals would have to be turned away because there would be no room for them.

Ohio Dairy Farm Investigation | Mercy For Animals
YouTube code for embedding | Share on Facebook | Support MFA's work
Chilling undercover footage recorded during a new Mercy For Animals investigation exposes dairy farm workers sadistically abusing cows and young calves.
Captured on hidden camera, the shocking scenes of abuse reveal a culture of cruelty at Conklin Dairy Farms in Plain City, Ohio.
During a four-week investigation between April and May, MFA's investigator documented farm workers:
- Violently punching young calves in the face, body slamming them to the ground, and pulling and throwing them by their ears
- Routinely using pitchforks to stab cows in the face, legs and stomach
- Kicking "downed" cows (those too injured to stand) in the face and neck – abuse carried out and encouraged by the farm's owner
- Maliciously beating restrained cows in the face with crowbars – some attacks involving over 40 blows to the head
- Twisting cows' tails until the bones snapped
- Punching cows' udders
- Bragging about stabbing, dragging, shooting, breaking bones, and beating cows and calves to death
Immediately upon completion of the investigation, Mercy For Animals contacted the City Prosecutor's Office of Marysville regarding the ongoing pattern of abuse at Conklin Dairy Farms. MFA is pushing for employees of the facility to be criminally prosecuted for violating Ohio's animal cruelty laws.
The deplorable conditions uncovered at Conklin Dairy Farms highlight the reality that animal agriculture is incapable of self-regulation and that meaningful federal and state laws must be implemented and strengthened to prevent egregious cruelty to farmed animals.
Although many of the abuses documented at Conklin Dairy Farms are sadistic in nature, numerous MFA undercover investigations at dairy farms, pig farms, egg farms, hatcheries and slaughterhouses have revealed that violence and abuse to farmed animals – whether malicious or institutionalized – runs rampant nationwide.
Compassionate consumers can end their direct financial support of farmed animal abuse by rejecting dairy, and other animal products, and adopting a vegan diet.

Although we don’t have to worry about a massive oil leak erupting in our immediate backyards, local waters do not go unharmed by the consequences of petroleum production. Save Our Shores—formed in 1978 to voice community opposition to offshore drilling—continues to fight against one of the unfortunate impacts of global oil dependence: plastic pollution.
Save Our Shores reports that 151,699 plastic pieces and 18,296 plastic bags have been collected from the local shores since 2007. Fortunately, says SOS executive director Laura Kasa, Santa Cruz is at the forefront of coastal communities enacting change. A ban (...)Read the full article -->

E.U. Push on Animal Welfare May Open New Trade Front With U.S. - NYTimes.com
BRUSSELS — One of the first things the European Union’s new health and consumer affairs commissioner did after taking office was to approve the planting of a genetically modified potato in Europe — riling environmentalists but giving hope to U.S. officials that an end to a long trade dispute over biotech crops might be in sight.
But John Dalli, who began his first official visit to Washington on Monday, may open a new, potentially disruptive front: animal welfare.
In an interview ahead of the trip, Mr. Dalli said he planned to tell his American counterparts that he intended to propose a new law on animal welfare.

Early Animal Rights Poem Discovered: A Mouse's Plea : NPR
He was just an ordinary mouse, nothing special. He lived, very briefly, 237 years ago, in the laboratory of a great chemist, Joseph Priestley. Here he sits, in his cage.
A painting of a forlorn mouse in jail
Benjamin Arthur
There were lots of mice in Priestley's lab. He had made his reputation as one of the first scientists to identify oxygen. He studied mice to figure out what happens inside animals as they breathe. This meant he regularly opened them to examine lungs, veins, arteries, to see that blood changed color when it moved through lungs. And since tuberculosis -- or "consumption" -- was the scourge of that era, lung research seemed like a valuable thing to do.
But animals didn't last long in Priestley's lab, especially mice. So many died that his lab assistant, a young woman named Anna Barbauld, decided that Priestley should give his lab animals a little more respect. It was, after all, 1773, just a few years before Lexington, Concord and the Declaration of Independence. On both sides of the Atlantic, "inalienable rights" were a rallying cry, and Anna, a young wife and poet, decided to write a protest poem. She called it "The Mouse's Petition to Dr. Priestley, Found in the Trap where he had been Confined all Night."

Sea Shepherd Whale Defense Campaign Saves 528 Whales - Sea Shepherd
The Japanese whaling fleet set out for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary with a permit issued by the
Intervention by the three ships of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society prevented them from taking that number. Sea Shepherd crewmembers were successful in cutting that kill quota by more than half. Their success at saving the humpbacks was 100%, and their success at saving fin whales was 98%.
Of the fifty humpback whales that were targeted, they did not take a single one.
Of the fifty fin whales that were targeted, they managed to kill only one.
Of the 935 targeted Minke whales, they killed 506.
In total, the illegal Japanese whalers murdered 507 whales.
Sea Shepherd successfully saved 528 whales- our biggest impact on the whale quota to date.

What are Wildlife Corridors?
Wildlife corridors are pathways that allow regular travel, seasonal migration or population dispersal of different species. Without intact, healthy corridors, species are unable to migrate, move, find food, reproduce or effectively adapt to a warming planet, habitat fragmentation or human development. As corridors disappear, so do wildlife.

Musicians Rock the Boat for Sea Shepherd
Bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, accustomed to making their own waves, seem to vibe with Sea Shepherd's brand of activist marine mayhem. After 25 years of supporting the group, Anthony Kiedis and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers were awarded Sea Shepherd's first 'Rock the Boat' award, in 2007. Trash McSweeney, lead singer for Australian art-rock band The Red Paintings, finds a kindred spirit in Sea Shepherd's maverick Captain Paul Watson, and the likes of Mick Jagger and Rick Rubin have been seen at Sea Shepherd galas.
According to Sea Shepherd:
Music is a powerful media and it is an essential tool for increasing awareness and raising support. We all have the power to change the world in so many different ways and musicians are blessed with the ability to convey messages powerfully with great emotion.
On August 12, Modest Mouse released a music video for King Rat", a track off their new album, No One's First, And You're Next. Proceeds from the download of the music video on iTunes the first month of its release will be donated to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to support their ocean conservation campaigns.

The Cove Wins the Oscar!
All Eyes Turn To JapanAn Important Message from Ric O'Barry and the Save Japan Dolphins Campaign:
Without your support, this would never have happened. So, even though I wasn't able to thank you all at the podium, I thank you all now.
But this has never been about winning awards. Our job is to end the slaughter and stop the poisoning. And now our work in Japan begins anew. We must focus like a laser on getting The Cove and our message to the Japanese people.
But there are threats on the horizon. Officials in Japan are threatening repercussions against university and community groups that dare to show The Cove. Dolphin-killing fishermen's unions are threatening lawsuits against theaters that show the film. There are even some signs that I could face arrest in Japan, even though I've broken no laws whatsoever.
We wont give in to this pressure. Instead, I am making plans to spend months in Japan with our Save Japan Dolphins Team. I want to be wherever we can find an audience. Our message will particularly resonate with young people, to whom we need to reach out with the dangers of mercury-contaminated dolphin meat and the slaughter of dolphins they love as much as we do.
If you can help me, it will make a world of difference.
DONATE NOW:
The Oscar telecast is the most-watched TV show in Japan! And they, and more than a billion other viewers, saw The Cove movie win!
But now I also need your help in sending a clear message to Japan's Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety, that the sale of mercury-laden dolphin meat must end now: Sign and send the petition at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/4/ban-the-sale-of-dolphin-meat
We need help in promoting the Japanese version of The Cove in the next weeks before The Cove opens at Japanese theaters. We need help for travel, video promotion, website outreach, legal defense, and screening The Cove outside of theaters in libraries, universities, and town halls in Japan.
Japan has 126 million people; only 600 have seen The Cove so far. Those who saw it were shocked and dismayed that this slaughter was happening in their country. We need to enlist their help and the help of millions of their fellow citizens to stop the Japanese government from issuing 23,000 permits annually to slaughter dolphins. We need to seize on the momentum now to pursue an end to the slaughter, once and for all!
Will you help us get the truth out?
DONATE NOW:
Thank you for your generous support of our efforts!
Ric O'Barry
Campaign Director
Save Japan Dolphins Campaign
P.S. The Save Japan Dolphins Campaign and Earth Island Institute do not get any funds from The Cove movie sales. (Those funds go to the OPS, which made the film, and their investors to reimburse them for their considerable costs in making The Cove.)
P.P.S. If you think there is any possibility that you might be able to come over to Taiji on September 1st to celebrate the beauty of Taiji and let them know that the killing of dolphins shouldn't start again, please note that on the comment field on the donation form.

The Myth of 100% Complete Pet Food | Sick-Cats.Com
Every day, people by the millions pour food from a package into their pet’s bowl. Day in and day out, meal after meal, pets get the same fare. This strange phenomenon is widely practiced by loving pet owners who believe they are doing the right thing.
Why? Certainly because it is convenient, but also because the labels state that such foods are “complete and balanced,” “100% complete,” or that they have passed various analytical and feeding test standards. Furthermore, manufacturers, and even veterinarians, counsel pet owners about not feeding other foods, such as table scraps, because of the danger of unbalancing these modern processed nutritional marvels. The power of the message is so great that pet owners en masse do every day to their pets what they would never do to themselves or their children – force-feed the same processed food at every meal.

PR-CANADA.net - Captain Paul Watson of Sunken Anti-Whaling Vessel Subject of Documentary About Heroic Efforts to Sav
Posted by Editor | |
Sunday, 10 January 2010 | |
The world's attention was drawn this week to the shocking action of a Japanese whaling vessel, which rammed the Ady Gil, a sleek and speedy trimaran owned and operated by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, putting its crew members in danger of drowning and ultimately causing the craft to sink. The incident, which occurred January 5th in the Antarctic Marine Whale Sanctuary, brought up the subject of international agreements to limit the slaughter of marine life, which have been widely ignored by whalers and other large scale fishing operations. One of the heroes in the fight against these illegal operations is Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, whose life and work has been brilliantly captured and recorded in the riveting documentary, "Pirate for the Sea." The film has been shown and has won awards at film festivals around the world since premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in 2008. Producer/writer/director Ron Colby calls Watson "the most daring, effective, and controversial marine environmental activist ever." A worthy subject for his film! Despite its timeliness, "Pirate for the Sea" has not been shown theatrically outside of film festivals. A public increasingly aware of the dire conditions of the world's oceans, however, would undoubtedly consider it a "must see," just as they did Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" a few years ago. Meanwhile, there is a good deal of information about Watson's Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on the web, where his efforts and accomplishments can be admired and applauded. For film-goers within driving range of Sonoma or Nevada City, "Pirate for the Sea" will be showing at film festivals in both those locations later this month. Famed Catamaran is sinking in the Southern Ocean
Six crew members Rescued by the Sea Shepherd Ship Bob Barker
In an unprovoked attack captured on film, the Japanese security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 deliberately rammed and caused catastrophic damage to the Sea Shepherd catamaran Ady Gil.
Six crew crew members, four from New Zealand, one from Australia, and one from the Netherlands were immediately rescued by the crew of the Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker. None of the crew Ady Gil crew were injured.
The Ady Gil is believed to be sinking and chances of salvage are very grim.
According to eyewitness Captain Chuck Swift on the Bob Barker, the attack happened while the vessels were dead in the water. The Shonan Maru No. 2 suddenly started up and deliberately rammed the Ady Gil ripping eight feet of the bow of the vessel completely off. According to Captain Swift, the vessel does not look like it will be saved.
“The Japanese whalers have now escalated this conflict very violently,” said Captain Paul Watson. “If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken. We now have a real whale war on our hands now and we have no intention of retreating.”
Captain Paul Watson onboard the Steve Irwin is racing towards the area at 16 knots but still remains some five hundred miles to the north. The Bob Barker has temporarily stopped the pursuit of the Nisshin Maru to rescue the crew of the Ady Gil. The Japanese ships initially refused to acknowledge the May Day distress of the Ady Gil,...

L.A. family raises money for homeless pets -- with root beer
As of now, you know one. The dog is Margo. The drink is Margo's Bark.
Two years ago, Oscar Youd, now 8, made root beer for his Los Angeles school science project. He and his father, Tim Youd, wanted to show how sugar and yeast can create carbonation. They did some study and christened the resulting mellow, high-fructose corn syrup-free brew they concocted Margo's Bark Root Beer after their family dog, a mellow and friendly gal and former Long Beach parking-lot stray.
The 300-odd folks at Oscar's school fair raved so loudly about the drink's wonderful taste that it got Tim, a marketing and internet entrepreneur, thinking. He embarked on a root-beer fact-finding mission, jesting about running a root-beer business. It turns out he wasn't kidding: Margo is now the namesake of her very own root beer company, Margo's Bark Soda Co. (motto: Drink a Bite!).
The moral to this story: Never underestimate the power of dogs, school

About a month ago, a tiny mixed-breed puppy wandered onto Sgt. Lucas May's camp in Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan.
Knowing it was against military rules to keep local animals as pets, May hesitated to feed or pet the pup. But her brown eyes and floppy ears were hard to resist.
A few days later, May, a member of the Kansas Army National Guard, called his wife in Valley Center.
"He said, 'We found this dog, and we want to see if we can get permission to rescue her,' " Amanda May said. "He loves dogs, and he knows how much I love dogs.
"I told him, 'We'll do everything we can to bring her home.' "

LAPLACE, La. - It was a final chance to romp around in the Southeast Louisiana sun for three puppies and their mom. The four dogs were at the St. John Airport in Reserve, preparing to take off on a northern voyage that will end up saving their lives.
"We go to the shelters and we get animals out of the shelter that are on death row," said Bert Claveire, of the non-profit group "Dog's Wish."
