International Animal Rights Day
The annual International Animal Rights Day (IARD) - 10th December - aims to remember the animal victims of human tyranny and call for the recognition of our Universal Declaration of Animal Rights (UDAR). The goal of this historic campaign is to build on the recognition of human rights, and persuade humanity that kindness and respect is due to all sentient creatures. Click here to find out how what you can do to support International Animal Rights Day.
IARD 2008 - the 11th organised by Uncaged - was an astounding success with around a hundred different events taking place right across the globe. Animal rights advocates have been raising consciousness among millions of people, putting forward the case for animal rights in a positive and compelling fashion through events such as candlelit vigils, protest marches, campaign stalls or letter-writing campaigns. Click here for a report on the inspiring IARD 2008...
Click here to see a video of Uncaged's Candlelit Procession in London to mark the 10th IARD in 2007
Campaign Support
On (or around) December 10th every year since 1998, candlelit vigils have taken place at locations across Britain, Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world, where the rights of animals are ignored - where animals suffer pain and death. The vigils paid tribute to the UDHR's (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) immense significance towards the protection of human lives, and endeavoured to take the principles contained in the Declaration one step further to include all sentient beings.
The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights - that animals have a right to life free from deliberately inflicted pain, suffering, exploitation and death - has been signed by large and small organisations representing hundreds of thousands of people in: the UK, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.
Additionally, the following major UK animal protection organisations have signed up to the Declaration: The Vegetarian Society, Animal Aid, Animal Concern, the National Anti-Vivisection Society, VIVA!, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Europe) and Advocates for Animals.
Animal advocates up and down the country have joined the campaign; and the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights has also been signed by these British-based celebrities: Joanna Lumley, Hayley Mills, Benjamin Zephaniah, Michael Mansfield QC, Miriam Margoyles, Uri Geller, Carol Royle, Amanda Royle, David Shepherd OBE.
We now have English and foreign language leaflets for International Animal Rights Day available to download. In addition, International Campaigns France have translated all information about the Declaration and Day of Action into French.
Progress
These actions have undoubtedly led to a greater public and political debate about the concept of basic animal rights. Political and legal procedures have been undertaken to establish rights for great apes in New Zealand. Similar concerns have led to the cessation of the exploitation of great apes for vivisection in the UK, and increasing public and political concern for the plight of all non-human primates.
Conversely, because of the demands of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, the genetic manipulation of animals threatens to expand - and thus reverse a historic decline in vivisection.
What to do in Support of International Animal Rights Day
If you have not yet signed the Declaration please do so.
CANDLELIT VIGILS
Previous IARDs have been a great success with even more groups joining in by organising candlelit vigils. We want to build on this success, by having even more vigils at either:
-
sites of animal abuse (e.g. a factory farm or vivisection facility)
-
city/town centres, where a prominent vigil or candlelit procession can raise awareness of animal rights among other citizens
-
national parliaments, to call for protective rights for animals to be enshrined in law
Therefore, we call on all animal defenders to hold further candlelit vigils on, or around, December 10th, in order to commemorate International Animal Rights Day.
With darkness descending early in December (in the northern hemisphere), a vigil can have a good impact at any time from 4.30pm without necessitating a very late night. This also allows one to catch people coming home from work, etc. One of the beauties of IARD is that animal advocates can hold a candlelit vigil wherever they choose, inspired by the knowledge that they are joining together with campaigners around the world in a global call for respect for animals.
CAMPAIGN STALLS
These are a great way to engage directly with the public and explain the philosophy behind IARD, and the concept that underpins all campaigns against animal abuse. In this way we can present 'animal rights' as the positive, conscientious, rational and non-violent ideal that it truly is. We have posters, leaflets and petitions specifically for use on IARD stalls. Contact us for more information on conducting IARD campaign stalls and to order materials.
LETTER WRITING
Writing letters to local and national newspapers (including the free ones) is a great way to gain attention for IARD. Letters pages are the most commonly read section of a newspaper. An 'animal rights' letter in a local paper will be read by tens of thousands of people, and may well provoke an interesting debate in those pages. Try news and magazine websites too. There are also hundreds of forums, discussion boards and chat-rooms on the internet. Some require registration before posting messages, but this is usually very easy and free. Your messages will likely cause a great deal of thought and discussion. We have an IARD letter template available - contact us for a copy.
INTERNATIONAL ACTION
We have already received great support for this campaign from many groups in many countries, but to maximise the strength of our cause we need to continue to build this 'international coalition' of organisations demanding the recognition of animal rights. We therefore invite national and local organisations across the world to sign the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights and hold candlelit vigils and other animal rights events.
REGISTER YOUR EVENT
Please contact us to register your event, find out about any local events you can participate in, and - IF YOU ARE IN THE UK - order campaign materials. Your 1st 100 leaflets and 2 A2 posters are free, with each additional 100 leaflets costing £3 and £1 for each extra poster.
Materials in many languages can also be downloaded from here. We can also provide you with English language animal rights petitions, sample letters to the editor and press releases.
Standing up for defenceless animals relies on your funding. You can donate to the historic animal rights cause by VISA or Mastercard here or on the phone, or by sending us a cheque/postal order payable to ‘Uncaged Campaigns’ (click here for our contact details).

Protect America's Wild Horses
Target:
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Federal land throughout the American West is home to thousands of healthy wild horses. Yet as herds continue to grow, Bureau of Land Management officials have raised the possibility of killing as many as 30,000 of these wild animals.
Recently, the U.S. House overwhelmingly passed the Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act -- a bill working to protect wild horses from the possibility of a government-sponsored slaughter.

The Cove: Take Part
Winner of audience awards across the world, including Sundance, SilverDocs and Hot Docs, The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. It's critical that we get the word out—everywhere. We believe that once the Japanese people know, they will demand change.

Notes from the International Whaling Commission Meeting in Madeira, June 22-26, 2009
By Mark J. Palmer
Associate Director
International Marine Mammal Project
Earth Island Institute
In the end, the IWC did nothing, and that was good.
The major issues before the International Whaling Commission at the recent meeting in Madeira, Portugal, were basically put off for more discussion.
One major issue was a pending deal between Japan and the United States’ representative, William Hogarth (also Chairman of the IWC). For two long years, Chairman Hogarth and the Japanese and a few other countries had been in secret negotiations to “break the impasse” at the IWC between the whaling and anti-whaling nations.
However, these negotiations really boiled down to getting Japan off the hook for its illegal whaling activity – issuing itself “scientific permits” to kill thousands of whales annually in the Antarctic and North Pacific Oceans. The crux of the deal was that Japan would reduce the number of whales killed under scientific permit if they were granted commercial whaling in their own waters of minke whales (currently killed under scientific permit), effectively ending the 25-year-old moratorium in commercial whaling.
But, as several of us predicted, Japan in fact had no intention of reducing the number of whales they are currently killing and made it clear just before the IWC meeting that they would go on killing whales any way they could.

Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States
Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States
This year, some four million dogs and cats will be killed in shelters. The vast majority can and should be placed into loving homes or should never enter shelters in the first place. But there is hope.
No Kill sheltering models, based on innovative, non-lethal programs and services, have already saved the lives of tens of thousands of animals. But instead of embracing No Kill, many shelters—and their national agency allies—cling to their failed models of the past, models that result in the killing of millions of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters every year.
No Kill is a revolution. And behind every revolution is a declaration—a statement of grievances, and a listing of rights and principles that underscore our great hope for the future. We assert that a No Kill nation is within our reach—that the killing can and should be brought to an end. Join us in endorsing The Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States. The Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States.

HBO: Death on a Family Farm - Synopsis

Each year, ten billion animals are raised for consumption in the U.S., mostly on sprawling, industrialized farms, where virtually no federal laws mandate how the animals are treated - though guidelines exist - and state laws are ineffective. As a result, animals are frequently subjected to what many consider cruel treatment and inhumane conditions in the interest of economic efficiency. DEATH ON A FACTORY FARM chronicles an investigation into alleged abuses that took place at a hog farm in Creston, Ohio. This shocking documentary is produced by Tom Simon (a seven-time Emmy® winner) and Sarah Teale, producer of the 2006 HBO special "Dealing Dogs," which received two Emmy® nominations, including Best Documentary.

Feeding Your Cat - Know the Basics Of Feline Nutrition
Diet is the brick and mortar of health. This web page lays out some often-ignored principles of feline nutrition and explains why cats have a better chance at optimal health if they are fed a quality canned food diet instead of dry kibble. Putting a little thought into what you feed your cat(s) can pay big dividends over their lifetime and very possibly help them avoid serious, painful and costly illnesses. An increasing number of American Veterinary Medical Association members, including board-certified veterinary internists, are now strongly recommending the feeding of canned food instead of dry kibble. Europeans Limit Seal Imports, as Canadian Officials Protest - NYTimes.com
In a blunt challenge to Canada and thousands of Canadian seal hunters, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to ban the importing or sale of furs and other products from commercially harvested seals.
A seal hunter dragged a harp seal carcass on an ice pan off the coast of Cape Breton island, Nova Scotia, last year.

Andrew C. Revkin blogs about climate and sustainability. Join the discussion.
The ban would mainly affect Canada, where the government has allowed several hundred thousand young harp seals to be killed each year by commercial and traditional hunters on sea ice cloaking eastern and Arctic waters.

Some people think that whaling is ok if its sustainable like Greenpeace

About this Petition:
Time is running out to save the polar bear and other endangered species. As their sea ice habitat disappears, polar bears are starving and drowning, and mothers and cubs are dying as their snow dens collapse on them due to a warming climate. In addition, pollution from oil and gas drilling threatens to destroy what's left of the polar bear's disappearing habitat.

In addition, pollution from oil and gas drilling threatens to destroy what's left of the polar bear's disappearing habitat.
In their last days, the Bush Administration weakened protections for the polar bear and other endangered species. We have a few weeks to restore their protections under the Endangered Species Act.
Congress passed a bill that gives the Obama administration 60 days to overturn the Bush administration's regulations that weakened the Endangered Species Act and eliminated essential protections for the polar bear. Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar must take this critically important step to restore scientific integrity at the Department of Interior. (show less)
The Desired Outcome of this Petition:
The fate of the polar bears and other endangered species relies on their Endangered Species Act protections being restored. Please sign the petition to Secretary Salazar to save the polar bear and other endangered species.
